I’m going to assume that everyone has seen Lucy already, so no one is reading this. If you haven’t seen Lucy, you probably shouldn’t read it anyway, because I’ll totally spoil it for you. So go watch it now, then come back and don’t read this.
Lucy is a science fiction film based on the (entirely mythical) premise that humans only use 10% of our brain capacity. The title character absorbs an experimental drug which allows her to access the entirety of her brain’s potential. She develops the ability to completely control her own body, to manipulate the laws of physics, and ultimately to travel through time and space.
What I loved:
The time-travel sequence at the end of the film is the most amazing trip. I could watch it over and over again.
Lucy herself (Scarlet Johansson) is amazing – a strong female lead, badass and pretty. She’s also mega-dry and independent, which I love.
The visuals are cool. Aside from the time travel, we also get X-ray vision of sorts, images of the drug rushing through Lucy’s body, and a rapid mind-shuffle effect not unlike that found in BBC’s Sherlock.
The message of the film – that it is time that makes our humanity significant, and that it is our limitations that make us human – really resonated with me.
What I didn’t love:
I thought there was quite a bit more violence and death than was strictly necessary. At least a dozen people got shot, and I lost count of how many cars were totaled. I just don’t like that.
Yeah, that’s about it. I liked the rest.
Would I recommend Lucy? Absolutely. Would I watch it again? You bet.
Five stars. 🙂
