Fools and tricksters tend to have a bad rap. Being called a fool stings. Tricksters bring to mind images of sneaky jerks that manipulate everyone around them.
Both of these archetypes, however, have positive qualities. I’m thinking about them a lot today because it’s April Fool’s Day, a day we traditionally play tricks and pranks on each other.
Fools have a beginner’s mind. They do not rely on vast stores of knowledge to make decisions, instead choosing what feels right to them. They see everything though fresh eyes. There’s a curiosity to the fool, and a boldness that laughs in the face of caution.
Tricksters are movers and shakers. They do not accept the status quo. They don’t like to work through established channels. This makes them incredibly creative thinkers. A trickster brings a new perspective to your problems. Humor can be a powerful and disarming tool.
A fresh perspective never hurt anyone. May you have the privilege of knowing the fool and the trickster today.
